This morning students wrote: "Check out Scholastic magazine" in their agendas.

First thing today, the grade 2's were stolen away for gym with Mme Harding, while the grade 1's worked hard with their sight words testing and learning about the community of Alberta. We focused on the fact that just like our St. Albert Community we have responsibilities; be helpful, respectful, clean up etc. We also discussed how we can recognize those communities (landmarks)

When the grade 2's returned, we completed our morning message and calendar time.

For Social Studies, grade 1's wrote about their favorite place in Alberta, and why it's their favorite, and where they would like to go, while the grade 2's shared the answers they found to our questions:

"What language do the people in Iqualuit speak?" Inuktuk

"What kind of animals live in Iqualuit" Polar bears, seals, whales, wolves

"What kinds of activities do the people in Iqualuit do?" dog sledding, ice fishing etc

"What kind of clothing do the people in Iqualuit need to wear?" animal skins, white clothes etc.

Grade 2's were then asked to draw what a person in Iqualuit wears on a daily basis.

After little recess and snack Grade 2's were tested on their spelling words (noise, choice, avoid, voice and point) they were given their new spelling words: ensuite, entend, quand, dans, grand which focus on the an/em/en/am sound. While the grade 1's read a French book to a partner.

In Sciences, the class was given another challenge. They were asked to build a floatation device using a variety of materials (corks, straws, toilet paper rolls, cups, elastics etc) for a sinking figurine.

Some of the Sciences curricular objectives we will cover with this task by grade level:

*In this building unit, grade 1 students are encouraged to select appropriate materials, such as papers, plastics, woods; and design and build objects, based on the following construction task: create wind- and water-related artifacts; e.g., dams, water wheels, boats.

*In this boats and buoyancy unit, grade 2 students are continuing to explore what sinks and what floats, and what makes an effective watercraft. Today, their main learning goal is to evaluate the appropriateness of various materials to the construction of watercraft, in particular: the degree to which the material is waterproof (will your child choose to use cardboard, which floats at first, but sinks as it gets wet?), and the buoyancy of the material. They are also challenged to add to a non-floating object so that it will float (creating the floatation device)

The grade 5 students have been working very hard at preparing non-fiction books in their English Language Arts Class with Mlle Gladu. Today, each Grade 5 student came to share their non-fiction story with a grade 1 or 2 student! It was very fun to watch the interest grade 1 and 2 students showed in hearing the grade 5 stories.

In religion today, we learned that sometimes it is hard to show love, but that doing loving actions can make us feel better. We also discussed and identified the differences between loving and non-loving actions. This tied in nicely with pink-shirt day, as we discussed whether or not certain actions (bullying) leads us to live as God intended us to.

This afternoon we had a good review chat of the rules at recess (forest etc) we then completed a round of Daily 5 and then continued our discussion in Religion.

The class ended their day in Music with Mme Dominique.

*Grade 2's did not complete the addition and subtraction unit as predicted.. We will tomorrow!
