Monday January 30th 2017
This morning students wrote: "We have library tomorrow" in their agendas.
We participated to the school assembly, where this month's "Parlons Français" school prize was announced: If you speak in French, you may plan with a friend to dress like twins on Friday February 24th!
The class completed a round of quiet French daily 5, followed by the decoding of our morning message. We had a sharing circle, where everyone was able to tell us what they did over the weekend.
A grade 2 student lead us through the calendar document, and then the grade 1's continued to work on the writing activity they started on Monday, while Grade 2's learned about Meteghan's natural resources.
Grade 2's started by learning about what a natural resource. We discussed that it is something that exist freely in nature, and is something we need to survive. These things include water (seas and fresh water), land, soils, rocks, forests (vegetation), animals (including fish), fossil fuels and minerals. We discussed the natural resources in Nova Scotia (Fish, wood), and how these create jobs for the people of Meteghan (Boat making, fishing etc)
After small recess and snack, students began to learn about using the make ten strategy with the help of concrete materials. I began by asking the class to show me the number 8 on one ten frame, and 5 on another. I then asked them to use the objects (8+5) on the two ten frames to make 10 (students moved two over from 5, and made 10... 8+2=10+3=13). This allowed the class to be able to practice visualizing and manipulating the addition. We then began to learn a make ten game which we will practice more tomorrow.
Please watch this video to understand the strategy a little bit more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_pTUVROoFg
*PLEASE NOTE!* This strategy works best with the numbers 8 and 9.
The class enjoyed music with Mme Dominique.
While the grade 1's were away for gym, grade 2's learned about the everyday uses of water (washing the dishes, taking a shower, to drink, to cook, for laundry etc). We then discussed our responsibilities for maintaining clean supplies of water, and identified actions that are taken to ensure that water supplies are safe. Students also made a prediction as to how water works in our houses. Grade 2's worked on practicing their spelling lists, which they will be tested on tomorrow.
Grade 2's attended Zones with Mme Ferre, while the Grade 1's participated to our "What is Worry" lesson. We talked about what worry is, and how to help fix our worry.
The class ended their day with Daily 5, and the reading of a special book about Edmonton's history
