This morning students wrote: "We have library tomorrow." in their agendas.
To start, please take the time to read through the EMP Newsletter that was published yesterday, as it contains information about our Open House and Art Walk on Thursday February 16th.
Due to the gym floor renovations over the Christmas break, and the need for the sealant to dry, this morning's assembly was cancelled... So the class completed a round of French daily 5 (Read to self/Read to a partner/Writers Workshop/Listen to a story) instead. Afterwards, we decoded our French calendar message which discussed what I did over the Holidays. We also took the time to review our French combo sounds. We then completed our calendar time routine. Finally, the excited students were given the opportunity to share one thing they received for Christmas, and one special thing they did.
We read a Winter themed-French book, and talked about all things winter.
In order to remind us of the classroom and school expectations, we did a quick review of HRTS by making our own indoor recess HRTS posters.
After small recess and snack, five students presented their posters in French, the rest of the class will present theirs throughout the week.
We played our "un de plus/un de moins/deux de plus/deux de moins" math game to review our math skills.
Students enjoyed music with Mme Dominique.
This afternoon, while the grade 1 students were away for gym with Mme Harding, grade 2 students reviewed what they know about liquids, how they move, the shape they make when they are dropped on a surface, why some surfaces are waterproof, and others absorb. We then did an experiment with apple sauce and water. I placed a small spoonful of apple sauce in a cup, and instructed the class to mix it with water-of course, the apple sauce did not dissolve in the water. We then put apple juice with water, and observed the differences between apple sauce and water and apple juice with water. We then discussed why one dissolved and the other didn't-noting the different consistencies.
Grade 2 students then had zones with Mme Ferre, while Grade 1's participated to Strong Start-today we learned about anger. Students were introduced to the "don't be an angry bird" posters, which show how we might act when we are angry and Cool Down Strategies to calm down. When your child becomes angry at home, remind him/her to: 1. Stop and Identify what is making them angry 2. Choose a Cool Down Strategy 3. Act or behave in a Way that Helps. A letter will be sent home regarding this next week.
When the whole class was back together again, we completed a round of Daily 5, followed by a quick discussion about New Years resolutions, which will lead our English writing tomorrow.
