Our agenda message today is 'Arbor Day field trip tomorrow'. Please remember to pack a water bottle, sunscreen, closed toed shoes and a hat in your child's backpack!
This morning, our grade 1 class led the school in a prayer! Great job to our three readers!
We returned to class to complete our calendar time. Following this, the class worked together to create a t-chart for oral presentations. What is the presenter doing? Looking at his audience, reading with a strong and clear voice, speaks in majority in French, and shows enthusiasm. The audience is sitting in good listening position, staying in one spot, looking at the presenter, not interrupting, and listening! We then took the time to practice with a variety of partners. Finally, five of our classmates presented their silly animals!
After small recess, we completed our Math unit with activities in finding all additions and subtractions that could give you a certain result. We also did some math word problems.
Following this, we discussed what the weather has been like in the past few weeks: rain/lots of sun.... And I asked them who they believed it helped! Of course, their answer was us, trees, plants, animals, and the garden. We then did some writing in our nature journals, followed by a visit outside to look at the garden. Which plants grew faster than others etc.
This afternoon, we completed our Daily 5, students enjoyed gym with M. Loiselle and we ended our day in poetry.
Until now, students have been writing about a handful of small objects - little treasures - in the classroom. Topic choice has been simple for them, the focus has been on writing with the form and language of poetry. Today we began to learn how to write from the heart, to write about big topics that matter, while still writing with tiny details. We learnt the following strategies that poets use:
-poets find a big topic that gives them big, strong feelings.
-poets find a small object or moment or detail that hold the big feeling.
-poets look with poets' eyes and see this ordinary thing in a way.
-poets write about it, experimenting with words.
