This morning students wrote: "Scholastic book orders due tomorrow" in their agendas. I decided to extend the due date, to allow everyone sufficient time to get the orders in!
Grade 2 students were taken away to gym with Mme Harding and 2A first thing this morning.
Grade 1 students were tested on their sight words. They also finished up the colours unit by predicting the which surface that paint adheres to the best, they then compared the adherence of paint to different surfaces; e.g., different forms of papers, fabrics and plastics.
When the grade 2's returned, the class participated to our calendar message. Grade 2's then began to write the good copy about their monsters, grade 1's began to write a description of themselves from head to toe.
After small recess, grade 1's learned to play a game that helps them to practice saying the name that is one more, two more, one less, two less than a given number. They then began to learn about solving word problems... I have 12 apples in my basket, how many can be green, how many can be red.... It was interesting to how many students could make that connection with our lessons of using different ways to represent a number!
Grade 2's used penny's, nickels and dimes to practice representing a number. This helped them to count by 2s, 5s and 10s. They were also asked to represent a certain "price" with different coins.
We then moved on to our next anti-bullying lesson: Tattling vs. Telling. We talked about the difference between the two, tattling means you're doing it to get someone in trouble, and telling is when you are saying something because what a person is doing may be dangerous. We then did a little activity called the "crumpled heart". Every time someone says something mean about you (tattling) you crumple their heart, after you apologize, and their heart is straightened out again, it is no longer as nice as it was. We then read the book: A bad case of Tattlle tongue. This is a story meant to help kids learn the difference between tattling and telling. A little boy Josh is known as the tattler, and no one likes him anymore because of this. One day, Josh gets the tattle tongue, and receives a visit from the Tattle Prince, who comes to tell him all of the rules of tattling vs. telling:
Rule #1-Be a Danger Ranger (If a person or animal is in danger, you must warn someone!)
Rule #2-Be a Problem Solver (If the problem involves you, take charge and try hard to solve it yourself first).
Rule #3-Now or Later? (Is the problem a "NOW" problem or a "NOT NOW" problem? Can your problem be solved at a later time?
Rule #4-M.Y.O.B. (Mind Your Own Beeswax! If the problem is not dangerous and it does not involve you... DO NOT TATTLE!)
This afternoon, the class read to self/read to partner/listened to a story. We then talked about adjectives (juicy words) and how these words are meant to make your writing more descriptive/interesting. We then created a list of words we could use instead of the word eat... Quite an interesting result!
The class was able to try using a variety of juicy words in their writing.
They ended their day in Music with Mme Domninque.
