This morning students wrote: "Check out Scholastic magazine." in their agendas.
First thing today, the grade 2's were taken away for gym with Mme Harding.
In the meantime, Grade 1's were tested on sight words, and learned about mapping. We read a book called "Mapping Penny's World" which talked about a little girl and the mapping skills she learned. We learned that all maps need a title, a compass rose, a key, symbols and labels. We also reviewed that maps are drawn from a birds eye view. As a class, we created a map for our urban community that we have been building... Tomorrow, students will draw a map of their choice (bedroom, school, classroom etc.)
When the grade 2's returned, the class decoded our morning message followed by calendar time. Then, grade 1's added a new "nourriture" (food) page to their dictionaries, they found the combos, and then used it to write about what they ate this morning. Grade 2's began to write a book: "guess my secret object" in French. We brainstormed good descriptive words, as they will need to use strong descriptive vocabulary so that their reader can guess what they are writing about.
After little recess and snack, students completed a round of French Daily 5. As a class, we tried to measure the classroom in hops, we talked about why this wouldn't be the best unit to measure with (not-specific etc.) then we talked about what could be a good non-standard unit to measure with (markers). Then, the grade 2's used blocs to measure a large person on a poster, while the grade 1's practiced solving word problems with skip counting (I have 5 bicycles that need new wheels... How many wheels do I need? 2,4,6,8,10!)
In religion, we learned that the Father sent the Holy Spirit through his Son to help us. We also all have the Holy Spirit in us.
This afternoon, we completed a round of Daily 5.
We found the combos and punctuation errors in the afternoon message... THEN we learned about periods!!! Students learned that these are used when you are making a statement. ex. The shaggy dog is brown. Students were encouraged to read their stories, and add periods/remove periods where needed. One of our grade 1 students read her story out loud to the class.
Students ended their day in Music with Mme Dominique.
