This morning students wrote: "Ask me about online communities." in their agendas. As we continue to move forward in our Digital Citizenship, your child is beginning to learn about a variety of online communities and how they can positively affect the world. Ask them to see if they understand!
Students completed cutting out the pictures and classroom vocabulary words that they started on Monday. We then played a kind of search and find activity to practice their reading and recognition skills. These words and pictures were sent home, feel free to encourage your child to play a matching game or even use them to practice the classroom vocabulary.
After small recess we read a French book about Autumn, and the children were given their nature journals. Grade 1's were asked to choose a tree outside that showed signs of fall and to draw said tree. Grade 2's were asked to draw using their 5 senses, by finding things that smell, taste, feel, sound and look like Fall. Once everyone had finished their drawing they were allowed to play in the park. We will write about our tree and Fall senses in French tomorrow.
Once back in the classroom we continued learning about "online communities". Your child may ask you to watch the videos linked below. They allowed your child to understand how online blogs, videos and posts can positively affect the world and that there are ways to collaborate with your digital neighbors. . We also followed this with discussing how they need to be responsible in the digital community.
Here are the videos: Life Vest - Kindness Boomerang / Digital Citizenship - Unicef / How do Children Spend $1? / 22 Random Acts of Kindness
This afternoon we completed a calendar message that had missing (covered) words. Students learnt that, in order to improve accuracy, if you do not know a word in a book cover the word (skip it) and go back to it once you've finished the sentence. The words preceding and following the skipped word may hint to what the covered word is! But don't forget to cross check: do the words look right? do they make sense?
Students enjoyed gym with Mme Harding's substitute.
Once back in the classroom, we revisited our Writers Workshop mini-lesson from Tuesday (When you think you're done, you've only just begun). The class became my teacher, and needed to direct me as to what to do next. This, hopefully, will encourage them to do the same as well in the future.
We ended our day with a book about a sweet tooth.
