This morning students wrote: "Reading session at 6:00 tonight" in their agendas. The reading session will take place in Mme Pamela's classroom.

Our school assembly this morning introduced our new act of mercy: clothe the naked. Beginning next week, the Kindergarten classes are accepting donations of gently used winter clothing for men, women, and children to be donated to the St. Vincent de Paul society. We will be accepting donations until February 8th in the Reading Corner across from the library. Thank you in advance for your support of this wonderful cause!

Grade one and two students completed a round of French Daily 5. We were then lead through the calendar document by one of our grade 2 friends. We read a French winter-themed book. The grade 1 students completed a clothing themed French writing activity-they were asked to draw an outfit for a friend who wanted to go outside in the snow, and describe what their friend is wearing. Grade 2's continued to learn about  the cultural characteristics of the Acadian community, we went in depth about how the Meteghan Acadian's traditions and connected them to the acadians of the past. We talked about the different events the acadians celebrate to tie them to their past.

After little recess and a small snack, Mme Schile came for a visit for Mlle Élodie's evaluation.

In mathematic, students learned about mental math strategies. We talked about what mental math is, and how it works. Most students said that mental math means you do it all in your head (which is true, however you use a combination of various strategies to answer questions). Students were then prompted to imagine the number 5. We shared what we could see (5 cats, 5 pokéballs, 5 fingers). Students were told that I came along and removed one of their 5 objects (students said they could now only see 4). I told the class that now I was giving them back 2 of their object (which meant they could see 6). We reviewed how mental math asks us to use strategies like visualizing, or doubles to answer a question.

Students practiced doing mental math using dice. Students rolled two die (6 and 2), then they were asked to describe what they saw: I see 6 socks, and then my mom gives me 2 more, now I have 8. So on and so forth. We then talked about using mental math to answer word problems (visualize the action that is taking place).

The class enjoyed music with Mme Dominique.

This afternoon, grade 2's noted the observations they made during our evaporation science experiment. We talked about why vinegar and water were almost tied (they have the same consistency, and vinegar is partially made out of water). We also reviewed why oil did not evaporate at all.

Grade 2 students completed their spelling work,

While the grade 2's were away for Zones, Grade 1's continued their Strong Start lessons. Today we learned about anger. A letter was sent home discussing our anger lesson, so please look in your child's pochette!

We ended our day by doing a round of daily 5. Students were given their reading strategy bookmarks, and we voted for which art project we would like for our art fair project!
