This morning students wrote: "Play in the snow!" in their agendas.

Grade 1 and 2 students completed a quiet round of French daily 5.

We decoded our morning French math message, and practiced highlighting in red the French toppings that make no sound at the end of a word (b's, p's, d's, s's, t's make no sound if they are at the very end of a word, and if they are not followed by a vowel). We solved the subtraction word problem.

One of our Grade 2 students lead us through the calendar document.

We read a French winter themed story, and grade 1's completed a French reading comprehension activity.

In Social studies, Grade 1 students reviewed what they belong to: EMP, St. Albert, Alberta, Canada, the World. They then used the smallest circle they traced and cut yesterday to draw themselves, belonging to the 5 places.

Grade 2's discussed and shared their family's traditional food, they talked about why they enjoy this tradition, and they were then prompted to write about it in French.

After small recess, and snack, we solved another math word problem. The class brainstormed all of the different strategies we can use to solve addition and subtraction problems (number line, naming the number that is one more, one less, two more, two less, using doubles, flipping the addition/subtraction, using pictures). We then learned a math game that combines using the doubles strategy with the naming the number that is one more/one less strategy. (students roll a dice numbered 0-9, they must say: double ____ and 1 more/less is ___.) We ended our math lesson by practicing flipping the symbol strategy, to remind us of the correlation between additions and subtractions, and how it can help us to verify our answers.

We began our art project. Today's art project is called: "Picasso hearts". We started by learning about Pablo Picasso-who he was, and what was special about his blue period and rose period. Students then selected whether they wanted to make blue or rose period hearts. Students started by making a pattern painted paper, using either a Rose or Blue paint palet they were asked to paint zig-zag, curvy, thick and thin lines down the paper. They were also encouraged to paint secondary patterns over their paint.

During Hot lunch, and Recess, the paint was able to dry for the afternoon portion of our art.

We ended our day by completing a round of daily 5, then doing some weaving for our art projects, and cutting out hearts.
