This morning students wrote: "Shrove Tuesday pancakes and library tomorrow." in their agendas. Grade 1 and 2 students brought home a permission form for Telus World of Science. In case your copy did not make it home, you can find it on my website under permission forms.
Grade 1's brought home new winter themed French flashcards. A reminder that you can find a video of me saying the name of each object on the flashcards on my Français tab on my website. Here is a new challenge with the French flashcards - rather than simply having your child practice the words on the flashcards, encourage them to make a sentence using the word they've been given.
Students participated to the weekly assembly. After the assembly, Grade 1 and 2 students were partnered up with a Grade 4 student to do some paired reading. What a great way to encourage leadership in the grade 4's, and help our Grade 1's and 2's become better readers.
Back in the classroom, we completed daily 5, and then chatted about extra ways to earn bâtons.
After little recess and snack, the grade 1's were given time to complete their "build Goldilocks a new bed" challenge. Grade 2's brought their materials to build the floating vehicle. Some students are already at the second challenge to add to their vehicle so that it can move on its own.
Students enjoyed music with Mme Dominique.
This afternoon while the grade 1's were away for gym, grade 2 students reviewed what we know the Inuit people where in Iqualuit. Then we learned about the Iqualuit Flag. Finally, the grade 2's discussed the preparations they had made before going to Iqualuit (packing their suitcase according to the weather, figuring out how they would get there etc). I printed off a fake airplane ticket for each child, and they were all "welcomed aboard Air Canada" (although, Air Canada does not fly to Iqualuit...) just like with Meteghan! We also had fun learning about why the Iqualuit airport is yellow!!! We took the time to look at pictures of what Iqualuit looks like from the sky: rocky, plants on the ground, no trees, lots of snow and ice, the sea, colorful buildings, buildings on stilts, jagged ice covered mountains, icebergs, steep-sided valleys, flowing glaciers.
When the grade 1's returned, the class completed a round of daily 5. After this, they were given time to continue writing their stories.
We ended a day by learning about solving people problems (problems that may occur between friends).
