This morning students wrote: "Practice telling math word problems" in their agendas.
While the grade 2's were away for gym with Mme Harding, Grade 1's were tested on Sight Words, and learned about the sense of touch. Students were asked to explain what the sense of touch is, and how it contributes to our daily life. They then learned that the sense of touch is not just your hands, but your entire body, the sense of touch is your skin. Students were asked again to explain what controls our senses, and tells us what we're touching, and they explained again that it was the brain... We reviewed that lots and lots of nerves connect our senses to the brain. Grade 1's were asked to explain different things that the sense of touch tells us-It's sharp, dull, soft, spiky, hot, cold etc. They then used different materials to make a sense of touch booklet.
When the grade 2's returned, the class practiced chunking big words into more readable parts with the French morning message. They were then lead by a grade 2 students through the calendar document. We read a French winter themed book together.
Grade 1's were given a new French clothing themed book. They needed to highlight their combos, read the book, and color the correct piece of clothing the instructed color.
Grade 2's reviewed all of the different Acadian traditions: Music (spoons, violin), Food (Chicken fricot - type of stew, Traditional meat pie, Rappie Pie- made with potatoes and meat) Clothing (old fashioned outfits), festivals (First snow of May, Lobster festival, Acadian Festival), the language (French, English) and the activities (Lobster fishing, clam digging, dance). They then began to write about which tradition they would like to participate to if they went to Acadia.
After little recess and snack, we worked on solving complicated math word problems. Students used manipulatives to help them visualize, and decode their given question.
We continued to learn about Jesus as a boy, and how Jesus is like us, and we are like Jesus.
This afternoon, after a round of Daily 5, students did Writers Workshop, and used juicy words.
The class ended their day in Music with Mme Dominique.
