This morning students wrote: "We have library tomorrow" in their agendas. Grade 1 students brought home their clothing flashcards today... A reminder that you can find a video of me saying the clothing words Français page.
Today the school participated to our weekly assembly. Mme Schile shared with us a fun New-Years video by the skit guys which helped the school to reflect about how to bring ourselves and others closer to God this year.
When we returned to the classroom, we read our morning message-which ended up being a math problem with an unknown variable: 17-___=13. We reviewed the "flipping the question/equation" strategy.
We read a French winter themed book, and grade 1 students did some winter writing-using a combination of clothing words and action words. Grade 2's finished writing the ending of the French story we read on Friday.
After an outdoor recess (YAY!) and snack, grade 1 and 2 students were introduced to the new challenge with les bâtons. If ever I catch a student saying something in English, that they could and should be able to say in French, I will take away one of their French speaking bâtons! We discussed the reaction we should have if I take away a bâton, and what we should learn from it... Hopefully this will avoid potential future upset student problems.
Grade 1 and 2 students practiced flipping math questions. We are continuing to learn that being able to change a question with an unknown variable into the opposite action (make an addition a subtraction and vice versa) can make answering a question much easier.
The class enjoyed music with Mme Dominique.
Demonstrate an understanding that liquid water can be changed to other states. We specifically learned that upon cooling, liquid water freezes into ice and that on heating, it melts back into liquid water with properties the same as before. We discussed that upon heating, liquid water may be changed into steam or water vapor and that this change can be reversed on cooling. We also did a little experiment about whether or not our liquids will evaporate if it has a lid on it. We predicted that the water level in open containers will decrease due to evaporation, but the water level in closed containers will not decrease.
When the grade 1's returned, the class completed a round of daily 5, and then we decoded our afternoon message.
Today, the class brainstormed all of the different reading strategies that we can use when we do not know a word. We made a list, and then colored in reading strategies bookmarks.
