This morning grade 1 students wrote: "Ask me about the zoo!" in their agenda's, while grade 2's wrote: "Ask me about what Saskatoon looks like."
Grade 1's left right away for their field trip to the Zoo (thank you to our two field trip parents who are accompanying them).
Grade 2's enjoyed gym with Mme Shillaker's class. When they returned to class they completed a round of French daily 5.
In Social Studies this morning, grade 2 students continued to learn about the prairie community of Saskatoon. We started by discussing the interesting things they discovered yesterday when they researched Saskatoon (a big Ukrainian community is in Saskatoon, lots of farms, big wheat fields). Then we read a book about prairie communities, and the class was asked whether or not our community resembles Saskatoon. We discussed some geographical differences between the communities in Meteghan (ocean), Iqaluit (rocky/cold) and Saskatoon (prairie) and then students went and drew what you can see in Saskatoon (tractors, farmers, big wheat fields, farms etc).
After little recess and snack
Grade 2's learned that for addition, the order in which numbers are added does not affect the sum, but that the order in which numbers are subtracted may affect the difference. Students practiced adding and subtraction using the algorithmic method, but we discussed and broke down that adding numbers (37+29) and "putting a 1 above the 3 after adding 7+9" is not just a 1, it is a 10th. You are adding 7 units +9 units, then you are adding 30+20+10(tenth created from 7+9). Students began to learn how to subtract using the algorithmic method.
We worked on our volunteer tea presentation.
Grade 2's were then asked to design and produce a device that uses a magnet as a final project for the magnetism unit... some designs are pretty cool! One student figured out a way to cheat in soccer by putting a magnet in a soccer ball, so that it attaches to the net.
After lunch and big recess, students completed a round of French Daily 5, then they continued to work on their story writing assignment.
The class ended their day in Music with Mme Dominique's substitute.
